Release Political Prisoners!

Take Action for Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled, Political Prisoner in Syria!

About Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled:
Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled was arrested & imprisoned along with his father and brothers by Syrian regime security forces at 5:30am on 5 March 2012. Regime forces broke the fingers of Jiwan’s father, who has suffered from strokes, but then released him along with Jiwan’s brothers. But Jiwan remains detained and is considered a political prisoner.

There are very real fears that Jiwan too is being tortured as his father was.

Jiwan must be immediately and unconditionally released. Please take action for him now.

TAKE ACTION: Write for Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled:
Please use the below sample letter to urgently demand the immediate and unconditional release of Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled. The mail should be addressed to the Syrian Embassy in Washington DC, with copies to international foreign ministries worldwide as well as media outlets. Addresses appear below the sample letter.

To the relevant authorities:

I am writing to urgently demand the immediate and unconditional release of Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled from arbitrary detention in Syria’s security system.

Jiwan has been illegally detained in violation of all relevant national and international laws. Arbitrary detention is illegal according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 7. Syria signed this Covenant on 21 April, 1969.

We remind the Syrian regime that torture is illegal in Syria, both under international law as well as according to Article 28 (3) of the Syrian Constitution. The Penal Code of Syria stipulates punishment for anyone inflicting torture on a person. Syria’s security system is thus fully responsible for the safety, health and physical and psychological well-being of Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled.

I hold Bashar Assad and the Syrian regime exclusively responsible for the safe return of Jiwan Abdulrahman Khaled, and for all prisoners of conscience and political prisoners currently held in Syria’s detention and prison system. All such detainees should be released immediately and without condition.
