Release Political Prisoners!

Take Action for Hazem Matar, Brother of Ghiyath Matar, Killed Under Torture in Syria

About Hazem Matar:
Hazem Matar is the brother of Ghiyath Matar, the bright young activist whose brutal murder under torture on 9 September 2011 drew the world’s attention ever closer to the crisis in Syria.

Hazem has now been taken political prisoner, and there are very real fears that he too is being held under torture, while Assad’s thugs massacre the population.

Hazem, the father of a 3-year-old named Rami, is arbitrarily detained, without warrant or charge, by the same brutal forces that killed his brother Ghiyath Matar and others under torture.

Hazem must be immediately and unconditionally released. Take action for him now.

TAKE ACTION: Write for Hazem Matar:
Please use the below sample letter to urgently demand the immediate and unconditional release of Hazem Matar. The mail should be addressed to the Syrian Embassy in Washington DC, with copies to international foreign ministries worldwide as well as media outlets. Addresses appear below the sample letter.

SAMPLE LETTER:

To the relevant authorities:

I am writing to urgently demand the IMMEDIATE and UNCONDITIONAL release of Hazem Matar from arbitrary detention in Syria’s security system.

Hazem Matar has been illegally detained in violation of all relevant national and international laws. Arbitrary detention is illegal according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 7. Syria signed this Covenant on 21 April, 1969.

We remind the Syrian regime that torture is illegal in Syria, both under international law as well as according to Article 28 (3) of the Syrian Constitution. The Penal Code of Syria stipulates punishment for anyone inflicting torture on a person. Syria’s security system is thus fully responsible for the safety, health and physical and psychological well-being of Hazem Matar.

I hold Bashar Assad and the Syrian regime exclusively responsible for the safe return of Hazem Matar, and for all prisoners of conscience and political prisoners currently held in Syria’s detention and prison system. All such detainees should be released immediately and without condition.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
