Yazan had heard about the thirteen-year-old boy of Dara, Hamza Khatib, who was tortured to death by the regime and his body delivered to his parents on May 24 2011. Ever since then, Yazan identified with the protesters. When Yazan’s father, Ahmad Amro, was killed by regime forces on August 1, 2011 during a demonstration, Yazan started saying to his family, “I want to march out like Hamza and my dad.”
In a horrendously criminal act, Military Security grabbed Yazan as he marched with his friends and other schoolchildren on October 10, 2011.
Arbitrarily detaining 12 year old Yazan is unconscionable to the extreme. Holding a child as a political prisoner is a heinous crime, illegal under international as well as Syrian law. We condemn the detention of the child Yazan Amro in the strongest possible terms, and demand his immediate and unconditional release.

To the relevant authorities:
I am writing to urgently demand the IMMEDIATE and UNCONDITIONAL release of a 12-year-old child, Yazan Amro, from arbitrary detention in Syria’s security system.
This child, Yazan Amro, age 12, was detained on October 10, 2011 in Hama by Military Security, in violation of all relevant national and international laws, specifically those pertaining to children. He is arbitrarily detained. Arbitrary detention is illegal according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 7. Syria signed this Covenant on 21 April, 1969.
In addition, torture is illegal in Syria, both under international law as well as according to Article 28 (3) of the Syrian Constitution. The Penal Code of Syria stipulates punishment for anyone inflicting torture on a person. Syria’s security system is thus fully responsible for the safety, health and physical and psychological well-being of Yazan Amro.
I hold the Syrian government exclusively responsible for the safe return of this 12 year old child, Yazan Amro, and for all prisoners of conscience and political prisoners currently held in Syria’s detention and prison system. All such detainees should be released immediately and without condition.
