Release Political Prisoners!

Take Action! Demand the Syrian Regime Release Teen-Age Med School Student Yaman Al Qadri!

UPDATE: It is with great joy that we report that, according to news from her family, Yaman al Qadri was released on 26 November 2011! Many, many thanks to all who supported her and pressed for her release.  Let us continue to work hard for the freedom of every last political prisoner who remains in the clutches of this bloody regime.

About Yaman Al Qadri:
Yaman Al Qadri is an 18-year-old medical school student at Damascus University. She is studying dermatology.

On 3 November 2011, an estimated 10 Syrian security agents viciously beat teen-age Yaman in front of her classmates at Damascus University, dragging her, throwing her into the walls, and brutally assaulting her. She was then forcibly taken along with a classmate to an unknown location. Her classmate was released an hour after the arrest but Yaman is still being held incommunicado.

Yaman faces grave danger and is at risk of torture, as the regime has systematically attacked health workers and professionals who are speaking up against repression and helping the injured.

We condemn this barbaric attack on and abduction of Yaman al Qadri in the strongest possible terms, and demand her immediate and unconditional release.

We ask all concerned people to take immediate and urgent action in support of Yaman.

TAKE ACTION

1. Join Yaman’s support page on Facebook.

2. Write for Yaman Al Qadri:
Please use the below sample letter to urgently demand the immediate and unconditional release of 18-year-old political prisoner Yaman Al Qadri. The mail should be addressed to the Syrian Embassy in Washington DC, with copies to international foreign ministries worldwide as well as media outlets. Addresses appear below the sample letter.

SAMPLE LETTER:

To the relevant authorities:

I am writing to urgently demand the IMMEDIATE and UNCONDITIONAL release of 18-year-old medical school student Yaman Al Qadri from arbitrary detention in Syria’s security system.

Yaman al Qadri was brutally beaten by regime security forces at Damascus University and abducted, in violation of all relevant national and international laws, specifically those pertaining to children. She is arbitrarily detained. Arbitrary detention is illegal according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 7. Syria signed this Covenant on 21 April, 1969.

In addition, torture is illegal in Syria, both under international law as well as according to Article 28 (3) of the Syrian Constitution. The Penal Code of Syria stipulates punishment for anyone inflicting torture on a person. Syria’s security system is thus fully responsible for the safety, health and physical and psychological well-being of Yaman al Qadri. I am particularly concerned that she receive the necessary care for any and all injuries she sustained during the brutal attack on her by security forces.

I hold Bashar Assad and the Syrian regime exclusively responsible for the safe return of Yaman al Qadri, and for all prisoners of conscience and political prisoners currently held in Syria’s detention and prison system. All such detainees should be released immediately and without condition.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

    • It is time that the Syrian regime release the thousands of innocent men and women that they are wrongfully detaining in a effort to quell the demonstrations that are taking place throughout the nation of Syria by people who wish for nothing more then to live their lives in simple peace and dignity.

  7. I do not know what the truth behind, the girl is beaten badly, but only at a first glance over her and knowing about her medical studies, it can be anticipated she is a brilliant scholar, how the security personnel are cruel who committed such malicious job, beaten her and taken into custody. The innocent girl should be released immediately and prompt action should be taken against the people who are responsible for such inhuman act. I have also sent the letters for her immediate release, to all the authorities as email IDs provided by you.

  10. FREEDOM IS NOT REALLY GUARANTEED ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TODAY; It cannot ever be taken for granted. Vigilance is required to maintain freedom even in America where we are told almost from infancy that ours is a free society. Most believe that and pursue their life’s dreams almost by rote. As we mature in this place, we realize humanity around the world is in trouble in many ways. News of cataclysmic events travels now with lightening speed.

Earthquakes and tsunamis, hurricanes and cyclones, tornadoes, blizzards, floods and other natural disasters are unavoidable disasters that make the news and cause us to rally in support of our fellow man with aid of food, medicine, shelter and compassion.

Nature made misfortune is something no one can avoid, even with modern methods of prediction of these events becoming gradually more reliable, all we can do is prepare in some cases and just get out of the way in others~

Man’s inhumanity to man is another matter entirely. Somehow we must find a way to make it untenable to look the other way when a right to be free, a universal right as a child of all that exists in the known universe-is abridged or attenuated in any fashion. Even if any individual is disabused of freedom by an act of state or government that individual should have the privilege of peer review so as to be protected from abuse of that power.

By this simple Tenet, and by the law of the Universe and the will of the family of man we hereby call on the Syrian Peoples and their Representatives in present office to see to it one abused and disenfranchised victim named or known as Yaman-al-Qadri be released from imprisonment/set free immediately.

    The whole world is watching
